Mastering FAQ

When you send your files, please provide me with as many mastering notes as possible with reference links to songs you’d like the master to emulate. Mastering requires WAV or AIRFF files at 96 kHz (44.1, 48, or 88.2 kHz will work, although for best results please submit the pre-master file(s) with the minimum recommended sampling rate of 96 kHz). If submitting stems, these should be bounced from bar one and all be the same length and the same sample rate. Please use the ‘upload’ link at the bottom of this page to send me the files via WeTransfer. You may also send me files to my email: [email protected].

Mastering is an essential process for every song or podcast that takes the final mix and prepares it for distribution. Processing is applied to the pre-master/mixed audio in order to achieve a sound that feels ‘glued’ together and sounding the best it can on multiple sound systems such as on studio monitors, your phone, laptop, cheap earbuds, expensive headphones and in your car.

The processing typically includes equalisation, dynamics modifciation, harmonic saturation and stereo field enhancement. When using a mastering engineer as opposed to a DIY or ‘A.I. Mastering’ approach, you’ll see results that can achieve a louder and wider sound-stage with a detailed and controlled sound. Mastering also ensures that playback of your song or podcast is optimal across all listening devices.

After the initial deposit is received, you’ll have the first version of the master within 1 day. For some clients, it’s often the case that the first iteration becomes the final master. Although for some projects, further tweaking may be necessary to tailor the master to your very own taste.

After discussing your project and sending over your pre-master or stem audio files, I’ll return an individual quote to you based on your own budget and needs. Typically this will require an upfront 50% non-refundable deposit. After you have approved the master, the final 50% will be due.

Get in contact with me via email ([email protected]) and we can simply replace the files – free of charge.

When mixing, it is common for some effects to be applied to the whole mix. Generally, this may include some slight equalisation in addition to compression to ‘glue’ the mix together. These effects may be left applied or turned off altogether, although during mastering I ensure that the mix feels glued and is sonically balanced throughout the frequency spectrum.

I have experience mastering music within a variety of genres. I generally specialise in mastering pop and electronic music – although I have plenty of experience mastering singer/songwriter, acoustic and rock.

An Apple Digital Master is a master that is created to a set of specifications outlined by Apple, Inc. Whilst anyone can create a master to this specification, only a select few mastering houses are able to effectively ‘sign off’ an Apple Digital Master so that when you upload your music particularly to Apple Music or iTunes, you’ll receive the ‘Apple Digital Master’ badge on the release(s) and your music or podcast will be officially recognised as an Apple Digital Master.

I am fortunate to have my mastering services approved by Apple to provide masters in the Apple Digital Master format. When delivering the final files to you after mastering, you’ll see a version with ‘(ADM)’ in the name. If you’d like to upload your release via your distributor as an Apple Digital Master, please use this file when uploading and follow the attached ‘ADM Instructions’ PDF file.

Please note that ‘Apple Digital Masters’ or ‘ADM’ replaces ‘Mastered for iTunes’ or ‘MFiT’.

The Online Mastering Process

1 - Upload

Send me your pre-master/stem files in a zipped folder either using the WeTransfer upload link below, or sending a download link via the contact form page.

2 - Quote

After reviewing the audio files and understanding how you want your music/podcast to sound, you'll receive a quote along with feedback of the submitted files.

3 - Mastering

This is where your track will be fine-tuned and enhanced for playback on all listening devices as well as prepared for distribution.

4 - Listen

After receiving the initial master, take a moment to listen to it on a variety of sound systems such as using headphones, from your phone and in your car.

5 - Feedback

After listening, we'll have a quick chat together to discuss anything that you may like to change. Afterwards, I'll tweak the master to your taste.

6 - Approve

Once approved, you'll receive all final 24-bit (for Apple Digital Master & Streaming use) and 16-bit (for CD use) WAV files in addition to a 320 kbps MP3 file.

*All fees due must be paid prior to the final delivery of files. After approving the master, you’ll have 3 revisions to use within 3 months of approval.
